Sankofa
Festival Celebrating
informal community development learning

In
October 2009, FCDL worked with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills
to support The Learning Revolution Festival, to celebrate learning for pleasure.
The Festival celebrated all kinds of informal adult learning and the difference
learning makes to individuals, families, communities and organisations. Hundreds
of events will highlighted the wide variety of learning that's taking place, to
give people who are already taking part in informal learning a chance to celebrate
what they enjoy and others the opportunity to try something new.
FCDL
are leading on two strands of work linked to informal adult learning. As well
as celebrating and promoting informal community development learning through the
Learning Revolution Festival, we are involved in a wider project funded by the
Transformation Fund - find out more here.
We are using the symbol of the Sankofa Bird for both the Festival and
the project work. Sankofa is a mythical bird from Ghana which represents the importance
of reflecting on past experiences in order to learn from them in order to shape
future actions.
We have recently launched
the Sankofa Festival website at www.sankofafestival.org.uk,
where you will find useful information and materials from the Festival events,
to help us to celebrate what's been achieved in the short time available.
