Action Counts
FCDL project work: Sept
2005 - Mar 2006
During
the first phase of this project, which ran from September 2005 - March 2006, the
Federation gathered information about trainers and programmes, through an initial
questionnaire and follow up discussions, to enable us to develop resource material
and design training programmes, and prepare new units and sample modules. (Download
a Report and Executive
Summary to find out more about the findings of this research). A
workshop was held in January 2006 with the aim of generating resources to skill
up community development workers to support sustainable development initiatives
within communities. Information from the
event is available in a
summary report
and action plan.
The
aims of this work were to: - Identify
organisations who train people to be active in the voluntary and community sector,
and the range of training and learning opportunities they provide
- Identify
and promote those training and learning opportunities which already have a community
development or sustainable development component
- Identify
training and learning opportunities which could be easily adapted to include sustainable
development and/or community development
- Identify
practical ways and resources to increase the knowledge and skills of trainers
so they can bring sustainable development into their training courses and workshops
Our
plan to achieve these aims involved: - Contacting
as many organisations as possible, who organise or deliver all kinds of training/
learning opportunities for people working in communities and sustainable development
and asking them to complete an initial questionnaire.
- Building
up a good database of trainers and organisations offering training, and find out
how best we can support them in promoting sustainable development and community
development in their training
- Promoting
examples of existing good practice which other trainers could adopt and use
- Running
a residential workshop with trainers to produce resource material for trainers
to use
- Developing
sample taster sessions, and new units at FE and HE levels
- Designing
'training the trainers' workshops and courses
What's
in it for your organisation? - This
work will help tackle the big environment issues which affect all of us by providing
opportunities for communities to decide what actions they can take to make their
communities more sustainable and better places to live
- It
will generate new resources for you to use
- It
may create opportunities for your organisation to generate income through delivering
new programmes in this increasingly important field
- It
will provide opportunities to develop existing learning programmes/ training courses
and workshops to include sustainable development
