This pack is designed to support the Community Development Monitoring and Evaluation National Open College Network (NOCN) unit at levels 2 and 3; it is an option unit at both levels.

Evaluation and Monitoring are inescapable within community development work - while these tasks are often forced on community groups and projects by funders, it is through looking at we are doing and have done that we learn to do things differently and improve our practice. As well as introducing the basic concepts and jargon words that are associated with monitoring and evaluation, this programme takes a critical look at the topic and suggest ways for community groups to take control of the process and make it useful for themselves.

It examines the difference between monitoring and evaluation and how they link together. The different approaches that can be taken to monitoring and evaluation, along with the issues that they raise, are explained. Different creative and participatory techniques are suggested for planning and carrying out an evaluation, and for letting people know the outcome of the evaluation.
